1. Initial Fault Diagnosis
The client reported a complete halt in production due to the primary industrial chiller tripping on high discharge pressure. Upon arrival at the facility, our engineering team conducted a thermal and acoustic diagnostic. The system was found completely locked out, and the compressor was drawing locked-rotor amps (LRA).
2. Execution & Resolution
- Recovered existing R-134a refrigerant safely into cylinders to prevent environmental venting.
- Dismantled the Bitzer semi-hermetic compressor. Discovered shattered valve plates caused by severe liquid slugging.
- Replaced the valve plate assembly, flushed the system to remove metal particulate, and installed a high-capacity suction line filter drier.
- Pulled a deep vacuum to 500 microns, recharged the system, and calibrated the Danfoss electronic expansion valve to prevent future liquid flood-back.
Outcome
Chiller restored to 100% capacity. Production line resumed with zero further delays.
