Godrej E6 Error Explained: Communication Faults
When your indoor and outdoor units stop talking, your AC stops cooling. Learn how to pinpoint wiring issues and test your PCB safely.

Understanding the Communication Loop
Modern Godrej Inverter ACs rely on digital signaling. The indoor unit acts as the “brain,” calculating the room’s needs, and sends instructions to the outdoor unit (the “muscle”) via a dedicated wire (usually Terminal 3). When this link is broken, the E6 code appears to prevent the system from acting unpredictably.
The 5-Minute Power Reset
Power surges from the grid can momentarily scramble the microcontroller logic. Turn off your main MCB/Isolator for a full 5 minutes to let the inverter capacitors discharge. Turn it back on. If E6 returns, it’s a hard hardware fault.
Inspect the Data Wire
The signal wire is highly vulnerable. Rodents frequently chew it inside the wall cavity, or poor installation causes it to loosen.
- Open the terminal covers on both units.
- Check Terminal #3. Are the screws tight? Is there any carbon buildup?
- Perform a continuity test with a multimeter to ensure the wire isn’t broken mid-way.
Measure DC Fluctuation (Pro Step)
To verify if the PCBs are generating a signal, you must test the live voltage. Warning: High voltage area.
Healthy: Voltage bounces rapidly (e.g., 5V to 30V). Both boards are talking.
Faulty: Voltage is a steady 0V or a flat solid number. The communication circuit on one of the boards is dead.
Diagnose the Outdoor PCB
If the line is dead, the Outdoor PCB is the prime suspect due to weather exposure. Check the board’s diagnostic LEDs. If they are completely off, check the main ceramic fuse. If blown, the entire board has shorted and requires professional component-level repair or replacement.
Estimated Repair Costs
Why Hire a Professional?
- ✓ Accurate diagnosis with an oscilloscope prevents wasting money on the wrong board.
- ✓ Safe handling of 380V DC inverter capacitors.
- ✓ Correct wire splicing to prevent future EMI interference.
DIY Risks
- ✗ Swapping Live (L) and Comm (S) wires will instantly explode both PCBs.
- ✗ High risk of lethal electrocution when testing live terminals.
Common E6 Questions
Can low gas cause an E6 error?
No. Gas leaks cause temperature-related errors (like freezing or overheating). E6 is strictly a digital data problem between the circuit boards.
Why do lizards break PCBs?
Lizards seek warmth in the outdoor electrical box. Their bodies conduct electricity; if they touch two live components, they short-circuit the board instantly.
Can I use standard electrical wire?
It’s not recommended. Godrej ACs send digital data. Thin or unshielded wire picks up electromagnetic interference (EMI), scrambling the data and causing E6.
Does a lack of earthing matter?
Yes! Inverters generate electrical “noise.” A proper earth ground drains it. Without earth, the noise builds up and corrupts the communication signal.
