Understanding the E1 Sensor Fault
The Room Temperature Sensor (Ambient Thermistor) is a small, plastic-headed component located just behind your AC’s air filter. It measures the warmth of the air in your room. The main PCB uses this data to decide when to turn the compressor on or off. If this sensor’s circuit breaks, the AC flashes E1 and stops cooling because it is effectively “blind” to the room’s temperature.
Visual Inspection (The Rat Check)
The number one cause of E1 is rodents. Rats love to chew the soft silicone insulation on sensor wires.
- Turn OFF the AC power.
- Open the front plastic flap and remove the dust filters.
- Look on the right side of the metal fins for a small black wire with a plastic tip. Is it severed or chewed? If yes, it must be spliced or replaced.
Connector Security Check
AC units vibrate. Over time, the plastic plug that connects the sensor to the indoor PCB can wiggle loose. Access the PCB panel on the right side of the indoor unit. Unplug the room sensor (usually a yellow or white plug), check the pins for green corrosion, and firmly re-plug it. Turn the AC on to see if E1 clears.
Measure Sensor Resistance (Pro Step)
If the wire looks fine, the sensor itself may have degraded internally. You must test it with a multimeter.
Healthy: Reads approx. 5 kΩ or 10 kΩ (at 25°C room temp).
Faulty: Reads 0 Ω (Short Circuit) or OL / Infinite (Open Circuit). Replace the sensor.
Diagnose PCB Voltage Output
If the sensor tests perfectly healthy (e.g., exactly 10 kΩ), but E1 remains, the indoor PCB is failing to read it. With the AC on and sensor plugged in, measure the DC voltage across the sensor pins on the back of the board. It should output ~5V DC. If it reads 0V, the PCB’s voltage regulator has failed.
