Godrej E1 Error Explained: Room Sensor Faults
When your AC can’t measure the room temperature, it stops cooling. Learn how to pinpoint sensor damage, rat bites, and test your indoor PCB safely.

Understanding the E1 Sensor Fault
The Room Temperature Sensor (Ambient Thermistor) is a small, plastic-headed component located just behind your AC’s air filter. It measures the warmth of the air in your room. The main PCB uses this data to decide when to turn the compressor on or off. If this sensor’s circuit breaks, the AC flashes E1 and stops cooling because it is effectively “blind” to the room’s temperature.
Visual Inspection (The Rat Check)
The number one cause of E1 is rodents. Rats love to chew the soft silicone insulation on sensor wires.
- Turn OFF the AC power.
- Open the front plastic flap and remove the dust filters.
- Look on the right side of the metal fins for a small black wire with a plastic tip. Is it severed or chewed? If yes, it must be spliced or replaced.
Connector Security Check
AC units vibrate. Over time, the plastic plug that connects the sensor to the indoor PCB can wiggle loose. Access the PCB panel on the right side of the indoor unit. Unplug the room sensor (usually a yellow or white plug), check the pins for green corrosion, and firmly re-plug it. Turn the AC on to see if E1 clears.
Measure Sensor Resistance (Pro Step)
If the wire looks fine, the sensor itself may have degraded internally. You must test it with a multimeter.
Healthy: Reads approx. 5 kΩ or 10 kΩ (at 25°C room temp).
Faulty: Reads 0 Ω (Short Circuit) or OL / Infinite (Open Circuit). Replace the sensor.
Diagnose PCB Voltage Output
If the sensor tests perfectly healthy (e.g., exactly 10 kΩ), but E1 remains, the indoor PCB is failing to read it. With the AC on and sensor plugged in, measure the DC voltage across the sensor pins on the back of the board. It should output ~5V DC. If it reads 0V, the PCB’s voltage regulator has failed.

Why Hire a Professional?
- ✓ Exact Matching: Pros install OEM sensors. A mismatched sensor (e.g., 5kΩ instead of 10kΩ) causes erratic cooling.
- ✓ Safe Splicing: Soldering and heat-shrinking rat-chewed wires prevents future moisture shorts.
- ✓ PCB Protection: Keeps your high-voltage inverter boards safe from accidental shorts.
DIY Risks
- ✗ Breaking brittle plastic tabs while opening the indoor unit casing.
- ✗ Short-circuiting the main microprocessor by touching multimeter probes together during live testing.
Common E1 Questions
Can I bypass the E1 sensor?
No. If you bypass it, the AC doesn’t know the room temperature and will either cool non-stop until the room freezes, or it won’t turn the compressor on at all.
What’s the difference between E1 and E2?
E1 usually refers to the Room Air Sensor (plastic head). E2 usually refers to the Coil Sensor (copper head) which touches the cold pipes to prevent freezing. (Check your specific Godrej manual to confirm exact numbering).
Can a dirty filter cause E1?
No. A dirty filter causes airflow problems and freezing, but it won’t trigger an E1 circuit error. E1 strictly means the sensor’s electrical connection is compromised.
Will a standard reset clear E1 permanently?
Only if a minor voltage spike confused the PCB. If a rat chewed the wire or the sensor resistor died, the E1 error will pop back up immediately when you turn it on.
