Error E3 Guide
When the indoor blower fails to report its speed to the controller, the E3 lockout triggers. This guide details the diagnostics for Hall IC sensors, BLDC motors, and fan drive circuitry.

Feedback Type
Hall IC Pulse
Motor Type
BLDC / High Voltage
Control Voltage
1 – 6.5V DC
Error Trigger
RPM Under 300
Step-by-Step Fan Diagnosis
Mechanical Spin Check
Before checking electrical components, rule out physical obstruction. A jammed blower wheel will trigger E3 immediately.
- Turn OFF power. Lift the indoor flap.
- Gently spin the cylindrical blower wheel.
- If it grinds or resists, the bearings are seized. If it doesn’t move, check for objects stuck in the fan.
Heavy dust buildup on the wheel can also lead to balance issues that trip the speed sensor.
Voltage Verification (BLDC Motor)
Modern Carrier Inverters use 5-wire BLDC motors. You must check three critical voltages at the PCB connector.
| Test Point | Target |
|---|---|
| Red to Black | 310V – 340V DC (Main Drive) |
| White to Black | 15V DC (Control Power) |
| Yellow to Black | 1V – 6.5V DC (Speed Command) |
Warning: 310V DC is present. Do not attempt this without high-voltage safety training.
Hall IC Feedback Test
If the motor has power but still shows E3, the feedback loop is likely dead. Measure the voltage between the Blue wire (FG) and Black (GND). While manually spinning the fan, the voltage should toggle between 0V and 5V. If it stays at a flat 0V or 5V, the internal Hall sensor is dead.

Carrier E3 Intelligence FAQ
Can a dirty filter cause E3?
Not usually. Dirty filters restrict airflow but don’t stop the motor from reporting its speed. However, a dirty blower wheel (the drum inside) can become heavy and trip the error.
Why does the fan spin then stop?
This is the classic “Feedback Error.” The motor has power to spin, but the PCB doesn’t receive the “I am spinning” signal from the Hall IC, so it shuts down for safety.
Is it the PCB or the Motor?
If the PCB provides 15V and 310V DC to the motor plug but the fan won’t turn, the motor is dead. If those voltages are missing, the PCB is at fault.
Can I use a non-inverter motor?
No. Inverter units use BLDC motors with integrated logic. A standard AC fan motor will instantly blow the main PCB circuitry.
What is the FG wire?
FG stands for Frequency Generator. It is the wire that sends a pulse back to the PCB every time the motor completes a revolution.
Why does my fan rattle?
Rattling usually indicates worn bearings or a cracked blower wheel. If the wheel wobbles, it can interfere with the sensor, leading to E3.
